RCNI Press Release 07 December 2006
Rape Crisis Network welcomes funding
Rape Crisis Network Ireland, is delighted that the long and hard lobbying by Rape Crisis Centres throughout the country and the RCNI, has paid off in the allocation of 2.5 million for Sexual Assault Treatment Units and a substantial increase in funding to Rape Crisis Centres and Refuges.
Fiona Neary, RCNI Executive Director said, ‘on top of delivering services, Rape Crisis staff and volunteers have been lobbying in local constituencies and through the media to make sure that the unsatisfactory response to victims of rape in Ireland is addressed.
We sought 7 million for front line rape crisis services and refuges, and we have been allocated 4.5. Minister Cowan nominated other aspects of his budget that would happen in two stages, with the second stage delivered if he was in office next year. We will be keeping the pressure on all political Parties to secure the remainder of this 7 million in next years budget in the run up to the election.
The funding allocated means that the vital services provided by Rape Crisis Centres can be on a more secure footing. Some services will be in a better situation to address current waiting lists. Major inadequacies in pay and employment conditions can now be addressed to secure expertise and continuation of services under threat.
Susan Miner, Services Support Coordinator, said, ‘the 2.5 million allocated means that recommendations from the National Review of Sexual Assault Treatment Services for two new Sexual Assault Treatment Units, more appropriate funding of existing Units, and funding for a Forensic Nursing Programme can be realised in 2007.
Notes:
• The RCNI is the national forum of Rape Crisis Centres, which provides a strong voice for survivors and is a catalyst for social change to end rape and all forms of sexual violence.
