RCNI Press Release 11 October 2007

Victims need support in making victim impact statements

Rape Crisis Network Ireland (RCNI) in light of the ongoing debate on the role of victim impact statements in our legal system, urges the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Brian Lenihan, to give victims separate legal representation.

Fiona Neary, RCNI Director, said ‘Rape Crisis Centres have long been calling for separate legal advice for victims in Irish courts. The current debate about the role and scope of Victim Impact Statements demonstrates the need to support victims in having their voices heard in our courts. Without this support it may be difficult for victims to fully comprehend the function of Victim Impact Statements within the context of the legal system.’

Notes:
• The RCNI is the national forum of Rape Crisis Centres, which provides a strong voice for survivors and is a catalyst for social change to end rape and all forms of sexual violence.
