RCNI Press Release 13 December 2005
Rape Crisis Movement says tampering with legislation on consent could be dangerous
The Rape Crisis Network Ireland (RCNI) says the age of consent should reflect normal behaviour and not hype. The law must not be stripped of its ability to protect the vulnerable.
Fiona Neary, RCNI Executive Director, said ‘well intentioned commentators are adding to the peer pressure young people are under by making it seem normal for very young teenagers to be having sex. How are we equipping our young people to make informed choices about sex and insist on their choices being respected, when we are also telling them that it is normal for 14 year olds to be having sex?
Notes and Statistics:
• The RCNI is the national forum of Rape Crisis Centres, which provides a strong voice for survivors and is a catalyst for social change to end rape and all forms of sexual violence.
