RCNI Press Release 13 May 2004

Maria Alexi: 1 victim but let’s not forget the 200 rapists

The Rape Crisis Network Ireland (RCNI) called for assurances that the Gardai are pursuing the approximately 200 rapists of Ms Maria Alexi.

Fiona Neary, National Coordinator
, said, ‘the heinous acts committed against Ms Alexi must be recognised in their true extent. This is not just about one man’s actions. There is a whole architecture of criminality involved in these crimes. The approximately 200 men who raped Ms Alexi help sustain this foul ‘industry’. There is no such thing as a victimless sex ‘industry.’

The proliferation of lap dancing clubs and such like, which are becoming the acceptable face of the sex industry in towns across Ireland, cloaks the harm caused by exploiting women’s sexuality. Jenny Swannock of the Galway Rape Crisis Centre (RCC) said in a statement today, ‘we need to ask ourselves what it means for our communities that we reduce women to this. Are we opening the door to further and increasingly serious exploitation and abuse? Are we making it ok?’

Our message to the victims of this abuse is that there are people you can turn to in Ireland. There is a way out. If you can contact a local Rape Crisis Centre or our 24 hour helpline (1800 778888) you will be supported and aided in complete confidentiality.’
