RCNI Press Release 26 November 2009
RCNI response to the Dublin Archdiocese Commission of Investigation Report
“The Dublin Archdiocese Commission of Investigation Report exposes 30 years of lies, cover-up and arrogance by the Catholic Church. The aggressive protection of the assets and -status of the Church came first, children, the community and the truth were of no concern” stated Executive Director Fiona Neary.
She continued “the truth is finally coming out, after decades of lies, deceit and repeated, known sacrifice of children. The catholic church has historically been regarded as a badge of Irish identity and the consequences of our national subservience to it is exposed again today. The report exposes deference to the church at the highest levels of the Gardaí – a further reflection of the status of the church which is shown to have operated above the law. The state failed to protect children and ensured the special position of the church.
The report is a vindication of the children who were abused, ignored and treated as liars. The church took out insurance against claims of sexual violence in 1987 – today’s’ report further confirms that the Archdiocese knew sexual abuse of children by clergy was happening.
The Dublin Archdiocese Commission of Investigation is to be congratulated on its excellent work.
