RCNI Press Release - 12 January 2011
RCNI welcome that An Garda Síochána planning policy 2011 gives priority to sexual violence
Fiona Neary, RCNI Executive Director said, ‘Victims of sexual violence often feel lost and overwhelmed by our legal system. Keeping victims informed means victims knowing that they have not been abandoned or forgotten – we know this can make the difference between someone withdrawing a complaint or not. Some victims also tell us they feel judged by the Gardaí and not taken seriously. If implemented the Garda Plan includes commitments to treat all victims with dignity and keep them informed – this will make a real difference for victims.
‘We especially welcome the introduction of a monitoring system which will drive implementation. We know both from victims and from research that there is much good practice in our police force – however, implementation must ensure best practice across the board. Rape Crisis Centres around the country look forward to working closely with the Gardaí in sexual violence crime prevention and welcome the Policing Plan recognition of the importance of Inter-agency co-operation.’
